Google censorship

‘We believe that more information means more choice, more freedom and ultimately more power for the individual’ – David Drummond, Chief legal officer, Google

Google releases censorship tools

September 15th, 2010 – The US government asked Google for user information 4,287 times during the first six months of 2010.
During the same timeframe the UK government put in over 1,000 such requests.
This is just two snippets from Google’s new Transparency Report, a set of tools designed to show censorship levels around the globe.
Civil liberty groups welcomed the tool but called on Google to provide even more detail about the requests.
Earlier this year, Google released details about how often countries around the world ask it to hand over user data or to censor information.
The new map and tools follows on from that and allows users to click an individual country to see how many removal requests were fully or partially complied with, as well as which Google services were affected.
In the US, for example, there were seven court orders to remove content from YouTube from July 2009 to the end of the year.
There is also a traffic graph showing Google services around the world and related traffic outages, caused either by governments blocking access to information or, more mundanely, cables being cut.
Google’s public policy head Scott Rubin demonstrated the tool to the BBC.
“Last year after the Iranian elections access to the internet was cut off and we saw a sudden drop in traffic to YouTube,” he said.
Civil liberties groups said the tool would prove invaluable to activists determined to plot against government censorship around the globe.
“I think it is a tremendous initiative and it would be helpful if other networks could do the same thing,” said Lilian Edwards, professor of internet law at the University of Sheffield and board member of the Open Rights Group.
“I think there will be some embarrassing data and it will vary from country to country. The UK is neither the best or the worst,” she said.
More data about the nature of the requests would be useful, she added.
“It would be interesting to see whether these take-downs refer to libel, surveillance and intercepts or the content industries. The more data we have the more useful it will be,” she said.
“It would, for example, be interesting to compare Google’s data with published UK surveillance requests.”
Google can provide such data and is examining whether it can release more detail about the requests.
Explaining the genesis of the tool, David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer wrote in the official blog: “When Google’s services are blocked or filtered, we can’t serve our users effectively. That’s why we act every day to maximize free expression and access to information.
“Free expression is one of our core values. We believe that more information means more choice, more freedom and ultimately more power for the individual,” he added.

The New Censorship

22 6 14 bervoets

Google, Inc., isn’t just the world’s biggest purveyor of information; it is also the world’s biggest censor.
How did Google become the internet’s censor and master manipulator, blocking access to millions of websites?

June 22th, 2016 – The company maintains at least nine different blacklists that impact our lives, generally without input or authority from any outside advisory group, industry association or government agency. Google is not the only company suppressing content on the internet. Reddit has frequently been accused of banning postings on specific topics, and a recent report suggests that Facebook has been deleting conservative news stories from its newsfeed, a practice that might have a significant effect on public opinion – even on voting. Google, though, is currently the biggest bully on the block.

When Google’s employees or algorithms decide to block our access to information about a news item, political candidate or business, opinions and votes can shift, reputations can be ruined and businesses can crash and burn. Because online censorship is entirely unregulated at the moment, victims have little or no recourse when they have been harmed. Eventually, authorities will almost certainly have to step in, just as they did when credit bureaus were regulated in 1970. The alternative would be to allow a large corporation to wield an especially destructive kind of power that should be exercised with great restraint and should belong only to the public: the power to shame or exclude.

If Google were just another mom-and-pop shop with a sign saying “we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone,” that would be one thing. But as the golden gateway to all knowledge, Google has rapidly become an essential in people’s lives – nearly as essential as air or water. We don’t let public utilities make arbitrary and secretive decisions about denying people services; we shouldn’t let Google do so either.

Google censorship: May Day Protest

obama_dinner_who

As a reminder

July 5th, 2008 – Workers’ May Day Protest Site Disabled

This coming Thursday, members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) are planning a historic May Day shutdown of 29 West Coast ports to protest the Iraq War. Here in San Francisco, ILWU’s local affiliate will host a protest march down the Embarcadero in support of the work stoppage. To get out the word about the action and the march, union members set up a website, hosted by Google. But according to several sources both inside and outside of the union, when interested web surfers went to the site last night and this morning, they saw only a blank screen hosting an Orwellian-sounding message:

“This site has been disabled for violations of our Program Policies”

Reached by phone, strike site webmaster Russ Miyashiro told me he was never contacted by Google to warn him of its impending takedown, which he said took place around 4 PM pacific time on Monday. And when he looked into the so-called “Program Policies” the site supposedly violated, he told me those policies restricted posting “things like pornography or stuff that has to do with criminality.”

Miyashiro claimed he fired off an angry email to Google early last evening. “We’re an anti-war and pro-labor website,” he said he wrote. “Pulling our website was an act of political censorship.” By around 11 AM this morning, the site was back up — though, again, Miyashiro said no one at Google bothered to contact him or anyone else affiliated with the site to alert them to the fact.

After Google was asked for comment on this issue, spokesperson Nancy Ngo said she would immediately look into the matter. As of press time there was no further comment.

ILWU’s Jack Heyman, who co-chairs the protest’s local organizing committee, said he believes Google “came to their senses” because people “from around the world started emailing them and protesting this egregious violation of free speech.”

Heyman says he expects the march on Thursday to be a watershed moment for the labor and antiwar movements. “Never in the history of this country have workers taken an action like this to oppose a war … our membership has decided enough is enough.”

Golan Heights Syria: UN resolution
Dec 7th, 2016 – New UN resolution demanding that Israel rescind its Golan annexation decision – The UN General Assembly (UNGA) reiterated demand that Israel comply with the Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution no. 497 for 1981 which declared Israel’s decision of 14 December 1981 to impose its laws and jurisdiction on the Syrian Golan as “null and void and without international legal effect”. During a session on Tuesday, the UNGA adopted a resolution titled “Occupied Syrian Golan” after it was endorsed by the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (the Fourth Committee). The resolution was adopted with 163 in favor out of 193 countries, 1 against (Israel), and a number of abstentions, including the US and Canada. The resolution called upon Israel to rescind its decision of annexing the occupied Golan, and to desist from changing the physical character, demographic composition, institutional structure and legal status of the occupied Syrian Golan, as these measures are null and void, asserting that all relevant provisions of the Regulations annexed to the Hague Convention of 1907, and the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, continued to apply to the Syrian territory occupied by Israel since 1967. It also called upon Israel to desist from imposing Israeli citizenship and identity cards on Syrian citizens and to stop its provocative measures against them. Read: http://sana.sy/en/?p=95475

Internet giant Google is investing an extra 300 million euros at its data centre in the Walloon town of Dour near Mons. In time this will result in the creation of 200 long-trem jobs.

Google made the announcement during a visit of the Belgian Prime Minister, Elio Di Rupo (Francophone socialist). Google’s data centre in Dour is one of the three largest operated by the company in the continent of Europe.

The 300 million will finance a major three-year expansion programme. Google hardware operations manager Freddy Bonhomme told the Belgian press agency Belga: “Work has just started. Between 300 and 350 people are being hired.”

Employment levels may fall after the project is completed.
