SYRIA: Belgian weapons for terrorists

Belgian Senator to Launch Discussion at Senate on Possession of Belgian Weapons by Armed Opposition in Syria

Aug 14, 2012  – BRUSSELS, (SANA) – Belgian Senator Nele Lijnen said that she intends to launch a discussion at the Belgian Senate regarding the fact that the armed opposition in Syria possess weapons made in Belgium.

Lijnen will pose several questions on the issue as soon as the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives resume their work next month after the end of the summer vacation.

She stressed the need to uncover the fate of exported Belgian weapons, and that many questions must be answered as to how the weapons reached the armed opposition to Syria and to whom these weapons were actually sold and when.

Several sources indicate that the armed opposition is using Belgian weapons, with photos being published that show Belgian weapons in the hands of militants in areas in Damascus’ suburbs.

It should be noted that Belgian weapons are exported to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which are supplying the Syrian opposition with weapons.

Syria’s Victory

December 13th, 2016

TASS/ The hostilities in eastern Aleppo have ceased, the city is under the control of the Syrian government, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, told a meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

“The latest information we have received within the past hour is that military operations ,in Aleppo have stopped,” the diplomat said, adding that the Syrian government has regained control of eastern Aleppo, and now the stage of practical humanitarian actions is beginning.

The ambassador said earlier in the day that militants and members of their familes are leaving the city’s eastern neighborhoods via the agreed corridors.

“All militants along with members of their families and the wounded are now leaving the city via the agreed corridors moving in the directions chosen by them, including towards Idlib,” the diplomat said.

After the meeting, Churkin said that it was too early to speak that the conflict in Syria is about to be over following the liberation of Aleppo.

Assassination of Russian ambassador

c0diondwgaaaupi

December 20th, 2016 – A rather inconsiderate tweet made by Daily Mail regarding the shocking assassination of Russian ambassador to Turkey sparked a barrage of criticism in social media.

While other media outlets focused on apparently mundane and trivial things like the killer’s motive or the potential consequences of the assassination, Daily Mail opted to report the thing that really matters – the assassin’s dressing style. “Russian ambassador shot by a smartly dressed man in a suit and tie,” the newspaper tweeted.

Mainstream media destabilizing Syria

Mainstream Media’s Fake News About Aleppo Designed to ‘Destabilize Syria’
Dec 20th, 2016 – Mainstream media’s biased approach to covering the situation in Aleppo is clearly aimed at destabilizing Syria and damaging the interests of Iran and Russia, journalist Sebastiano Caputo told Sputnik Italy.

In an interview with Sputnik’s Italian edition, journalist Sebastiano Caputo slammed mainstream media outlets’ biased approach to covering the situation in Aleppo which he said is all about destabilizing Syria and damaging the interests of Moscow and Tehran.

According to him, there is a constant stream of manipulated information, and mainstream journalists instead of traveling to the scene, focus on copying the news from television channels Al-Arabiya and Al-Jazeera, which are controlled by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, respectively. These are the countries, he said, which have had their hands stained with the blood for more than five years, and which have not the slightest interest in providing any objective information. “The purpose of their news is to try to destabilize Syria and deal a blow to Iran and Russia, because Saudi Arabia and Qatar are the US’ allies in the Middle East. Covering the situation in Aleppo, Western journalists use anonymous sources and fake Twitter accounts, among other things. The Western media is hypocritical, and they show ordinary people allegedly being killed by only one side of the conflict,” Caputo said.

Germany: Nine people killed and 45 injured at Berlin’s Breitscheidplatz

2196

December 20th, 2016

French president François Hollande tweeted his condolences to Germany:

“I express my solidarity and compassion to Chancellor Merkel, to the German people and to the families of the victims of Berlin,” he wrote.

——

A statement from the White House condemns “what appears to have been a terrorist attack” in Berlin, and noting that the US government has been in touch with German officials and offers assistance as required.

The statement by National Security Council spokesperson Ned Price reads in full:

The United States condemns in the strongest terms what appears to have been a terrorist attack on a Christmas Market in Berlin, Germany, which has killed and wounded dozens. We send our thoughts and prayers to the families and loved ones of those killed, just as we wish a speedy recovery to all of those wounded. We also extend our heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Germany. We have been in touch with German officials, and we stand ready to provide assistance as they recover from and investigate this horrific incident. Germany is one of our closest partners and strongest allies, and we stand together with Berlin in the fight against all those who target our way of life and threaten our societies.

The US, France, Britain and Germany supplied weapons to the Middle East

German Journalist Who Interviewed Syrian ISIS Daesh Commander: US Providing Weapons to Terrorists

71-105684153-null-25-09-2016-16-06-06-978-1

October 8th, 2016 – Last month, German journalist Jurgen Todenhofer, the first Western journalist to be given access to Daesh (ISIS) controlled territory, conducted an explosive interview with a Nusra Front commander in Syria. Soon afterward, he was accused of ‘fabricating’ the interview. Speaking to Sputnik Deutschland, Todenhofer responded to his critics.

Late last month, an unnamed militant believed to be a senior Nusra Front commander told Todenhoffer in an interview that his group had received advanced weapons, including BGM TOW anti-tank missiles, from the United States.

The sensational (and damning) interview soon spread around the world, and soon German media engaged in damage control began claiming that the interview was a fake. The detractors’ main allegation focused on the territory where the interview was conducted; skeptics even suggested that the terrorist militant was actually a Syrian government plant.

Speaking to Sputnik Deutschland about the now famous interview, Todenhofer explained that he never had any illusions that his journalistic effort, and its shocking revelations about the extent of Western support for Islamist terrorists, would cause a strong reaction, “both from terrorists and from those who support mainstream Western policy in the Middle East.”

“I think that most of those who criticized me wanted to divert attention from two things, [first of all] from the issue of the supply of weapons to the Middle East, which is really indisputable. The US, France, Britain and Germany supply weapons to the Middle East. I believe that this is a very serious problem that needs to be discussed. And these weapons aren’t there to shoot fireworks – they are there to conduct wars with.”

Secondly, Todenhofer noted,

“they want to distract from the fact that my interview – and not just this one but my earlier statements as well, destroy the mainstream worldview. This worldview suggests that in Syria, there is supposedly only one side fighting – namely the Syrian government and the Russians. If that were true, the war would have ended a long time ago. The truth is that there are two sides fighting a brutal war against one another.”

Commenting on the details of his interview with the Nusra Front commander, the journalist recalled that at first, it wasn’t even clear whether the jihadist would agree to filming.

“At first, there was a great deal of stress, because we were surrounded by gunmen in masks, and our driver feared that we had been trapped. But the conversation went smoothly. This commander is not a politician – not a Salafist, not a fanatic; he’s just a mercenary, who managed to serve in the ranks of at least two rebel groups – a field commander with perhaps about 200 people under his command. And since he is not a politician, he spoke openly about the things he knows.”

Incidentally, for the sceptics out there, the journalist emphasized the commander did not actually say that his group received weapons ‘directly from the Americans.’

“He said ‘we directly received American weapons’. He did not say whether this was from a country or organization serving as an intermediary, but there is no doubt [that this is going on]. Everyone knows that the US and other countries supply weapons to the rebels; they say that they supply them to the ‘moderate opposition’, but we all know that some of these weapons are then passed to radical rebels and terrorists.”

Congo: The CIA, Belgium and the Assassination of an African Hero

the-first-prime-minister-of-independent-congo-patrice-lumumba-arrested-and-then-murdered-on-jan-17-1961

“The day will come when history will speak… Africa will write its own history… it will be a history of glory and dignity.” – Patrice Lumumba

It was the height of the Cold War when Sidney Gottlieb arrived in Congo in September 1960. The CIA man was toting a vial of poison. His target: the toothbrush of Patrice Lumumba, Congo’s charismatic first prime minister, who was also feared to be a rabid Communist.
Lumumba being humiliated after his arrest while an elated Mobutu looks onLumumba being humiliated after his arrest while an elated Mobutu looks on
As it happened, Lumumba was toppled in a military coup just days before Gottlieb turned up with his poison. The plot was abandoned, the lethal potion dumped in the Congo River.

When Lumumba finally was killed, in January 1961, no one was surprised when fingers started pointing at the CIA. A Senate investigation of CIA assassinations 14 years later found no proof that the agency was behind the hit, but suspicions linger.

Today, new evidence suggests Belgium, Congo’s former colonialist ruler, was the mastermind. According to The Assassination of Lumumba, a book published recently in Belgium by sociologist Ludo de Witte, Belgian operatives directed and carried out the murder, and even helped dispose of the body. Belgian authorities are investigating, but officials admit de Witte’s account appears accurate.

Does that mean the CIA didn’t play a role?

Declassified U.S. cables from the year preceding the assassination bristle with paranoia about a Lumumba-led Soviet Communist takeover. The CIA was hatching plots against Cuban leader Fidel Castro and was accused of fomenting coups and planning assassinations worldwide.

And Lumumba clearly scared the daylights out of the Eisenhower administration. “In high quarters here, it is the clear-cut conclusion that if [Lumumba] continues to hold high office, the inevitable result will [have] disastrous consequences . . . for the interests of the free world generally,” CIA Director Allen Dulles wrote. “Consequently, we conclude that his removal must be an urgent and prime objective.”

Even out of office, Lumumba remained under the microscope of Western spy services. His ties to Moscow frightened Washington. His fierce anti-colonialism unnerved Brussels. Belgium finally got its chance at Lumumba after Congolese authorities arrested him in December 1960.

Belgian officials engineered his transfer to the breakaway province of Katanga, which was under Belgian control. De Witte reveals a telegram from Belgium’s African-affairs minister, Harold d’Aspremont Lynden, essentially ordering that Lumumba be sent to Katanga. Anyone who knew the place knew that was a death sentence.

Firing squad. When Lumumba arrived in Katanga, on January 17, accompanied by several Belgians, he was bleeding from a severe beating. Later that evening, Lumumba was killed by a firing squad commanded by a Belgian officer. A week earlier, he had written to his wife, “I prefer to die with my head unbowed, my faith unshakable, and with profound trust in the destiny of my country.” Lumumba was 35.

The next step was to destroy the evidence. Four days later, Belgian Police Commissioner Gerard Soete and his brother cut up the body with a hacksaw and dissolved it in sulfuric acid. In an interview on Belgian television last year, Soete displayed a bullet and two teeth he claimed to have saved from Lumumba’s body.

What remains unclear is the extent, if any, of Washington’s involvement in the final plot. A Belgian official who helped engineer Lumumba’s transfer to Katanga told de Witte that he kept CIA station chief Lawrence Devlin fully informed of the plan. “The Americans were informed of the transfer because they actively discussed this thing for weeks,” says de Witte. But Devlin, now retired, denies any previous knowledge of the transfer.

Either way, Lumumba’s death served its purpose: It bolstered the shaky regime of a formerly obscure colonel named Joseph Mobutu. During his three-decade rule, Mobutu would run his country, bursting with natural resources, into the depths of poverty. It took a civil war to oust him, and Congo has seen little peace since.

Today, at least five countries are fighting in Congo and Lumumba’s son, an opposition leader, spent several weeks in a Kinshasa jail cell on politically motivated charges.

Syria: American senators attack Russian banks

american-senators-attack-russian-banks

As a reminder: ‘Sour over Syria: American senators attack Russian banks’

Sep 18th, 2013 – In Cold War style, US Senators have urged the Obama administration to freeze assets of three major Russian banks, ban their activities in the US, and deny employees’ entry into the country on the suspicion they are doing business with the Assad regime.

Having failed to galvanize allies for military action, and politically trumped by President Putin’s proposal for peaceful intervention in Syria, American congressmen have now turned to soft power to regain a grip on the Syria conflict.  The senators are blaming Russia’s banking giants VTB, Gazprombank, and Vnesheconombank -the state development bank known as VEB– for ‘undermining’ UN sanctions by ‘aiding Assad’.

“The Syrians could not conduct this war without Russian financing,” Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat who represents the state of Connecticut, said at a US policy meeting on Iran and Syria at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington DC.

“We can freeze their assets. We can stop them from doing business in the United States, prevent their employees from traveling here and, in effect, impose very heavy financial pain on the Russians,” Blumenthal said.

Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut is a staunch supporter of Israel

WASHINGTON, February 3th, 2014— The last time the nation’s most potent pro-Israel lobbying group lost a major showdown with the White House was when President Ronald Reagan agreed to sell Awacs surveillance planes to Saudi Arabia over the group’s bitter objections.
Since then, the group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, has run up an impressive record of legislative victories in its quest to rally American support for Israel, using a robust network of grass-roots supporters and a rich donor base to push a raft of bills through Congress. Typically, they pass by unanimous votes.
But now Aipac, as the group is known, once again finds itself in a very public standoff with the White House. Its top priority, a Senate bill to impose new sanctions on Iran, has stalled after stiff resistance from President Obama, and in what amounts to a tacit retreat, Aipac has stopped pressuring Senate Democrats to vote for the bill.
Officials at the group insist it never called for an immediate vote and say the legislation may yet pass if Mr. Obama’s effort to negotiate a nuclear agreement with Iran fails or if Iran reneges on its interim deal with the West. But for the moment, Mr. Obama has successfully made the case that passing new sanctions against Tehran now could scuttle the nuclear talks and put America on the road to another war.
Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, a staunch supporter of Israel, is one of 16 Democrats who signed on to the bill, along with 43 of the Senate’s 45 Republicans, bringing it to within a few votes of a veto-proof majority. Now Mr. Blumenthal says the Senate should hold off on a vote to give Mr. Obama breathing room for diplomacy.
“There’s been an unquestionable, undeniable shift in the perception of national security,” Mr. Blumenthal said. “I’m sensitive to the feelings, the resistance, the aversion of the general public to any kind of American military engagement.”
